The Striped Beauties: Zebras

Zebras are often admired for their striking black-and-white stripes, but caring for these animals in captivity is no easy task. In the wild, zebras rely on large open plains to graze and stay alert for predators. At the zoo, ensuring their mental and physical health means replicating this sense of space and security.

One zebra, Bella, became the focus of an innovative enrichment project. Bella was particularly wary of visitors and would often retreat to the farthest corners of her enclosure. Zookeepers began introducing new features, such as puzzle feeders that required her to manipulate objects to access food. These activities helped build her confidence and engaged her problem-solving skills.

To further support Bella, the zoo also introduced a small herd, including a young male zebra who became her constant companion. Over time, Bella began venturing closer to visitors, and her once-cautious demeanor transformed into one of calm curiosity. Today, Bella is often seen grazing peacefully, her trust in her environment fully restored.
