The Gentle Brazilian Tapir

The Brazilian tapir, a herbivorous mammal resembling a cross between a pig and an anteater, is one of the zoo’s most charming residents. Luna, the zoo’s female tapir, was born in captivity as part of a breeding program for vulnerable species.

Luna quickly became known for her curiosity and love of water. Her enclosure features a large pond, where she can often be seen splashing or nibbling on aquatic plants. To keep her engaged, zookeepers offer Luna a variety of fruits and vegetables, hiding them in puzzle feeders to encourage her natural foraging behavior.

During a summer heatwave, the team created an ice block filled with her favorite treats—melons and carrots. Watching Luna enthusiastically lick and push the ice block was both heartwarming and entertaining for visitors. Her gentle nature and unique appearance make her a favorite among children.
